Article 5: Black education: Achievments, myths and tragedies
Misconception: In order correct the educational gap between white and black students, the Board of Education must continue to pursue new and improved methods of teaching.
Arguments:
- Liberal politicians use this idea to further their own political agendas, failing to analyze the numerous African American high schools today and in the past that have experienced incredible success in traditional ways (Dunbar High School).
- It has been proven again and again that African-American education can be successful when teachers return to old fashion principles of discipline and work ethic.
- It is an anti-intellectual culture that accounts for the low test scores among young black Americans, and this be overcome through changes in environment.
"...fewer are prepared to challenge black students to work harder and abandon the counterproductive notion that seeking educational excellence is 'acting white" (244).
